Ocean Celebration 2014

Happy Oceans Day, Week and Month!

This year to celebrate and honour our oceans, Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe) participated in 2 events: the launch of Tim Hortons Children's Foundation's summer camp marine centre and Seacology by Kayak 'Exploring our coasts by kayak'.

Children's Camp Marine Centre

Volunteers from the Ecology Action Centre's Marine Issues Committee, Dalhousie University and Canadian Healthy Oceans Network shared their love of the ocean with the public at Tim Hortons Children's Foundation: Camp Open House in Tatamagouche, NS. They helped the THCF team launch their NEW Marine Centre, and brought lots of activities with them - fishing for fish or trash?, marine art, face painting, coloring book, books, games and more.... It was SO much FUN! Hopefully we'll continue to partner with THCF in the future to share our coastal and marine knowledge.

Exploring Nova Scotia's Coast by Kayak

On June 3rd Seacology by Kayak paddles explored Nova Scotia's coast by kayak, learning about life living between the tides through stories and fun facts to launch Seacology and to celebrate Oceans Week!

Michelle Lloyd (CHONe coordinator), Zoe Ward and David-Angelo Williams (4th year undergrads, Dalhousie University) were the volunteer naturalists who taught paddlers about the species that live along the intertidal zone and the way that they contribute to this incredible ecosystem. They were joined by Alexandra Vance (Oceans Week coordinator), who shared some of her research on leatherback turtle migration to the maritime region. It was a great way to discover our coastline and reconnect with our oceans. Even though it turned from a beautiful sunny day to a damp and rain evening, more than 20 paddlers Check out photos from 'Exploring Nova Scotia's coast by Kayak' tour.
