Data Policy

The Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe) is a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) strategic research network focused on biodiversity science for the sustainability of Canada's three oceans.  CHONe includes ~150 researchers from 14 universities across Canada, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), and seven other government laboratories, working on 36 collaborative research projects.

The wealth of knowledge and data generated by CHONe researchers must be managed, to maximize the exchange and accessibility of relevant data, and to leave a lasting legacy. Legacy here concerns both the protection of new information from loss, and the extent to which data can be reused by others in the.

The CHONe Data Policy, outlines the overall objectives for management of CHONe data, as well as underlying principles and guidelines (i.e. data, ownership, authorship, sharing, handling practices, access and usage) to help meet CHONe’s data management obligations, which are to ensure all data will be publically and freely available, and to ensure long-term preservation and accessibility of data.
