Canada’s oceans are changing, responding to natural and human threats to marine biodiversity and ocean health. Ocean health is critical to our health and that of our planet. To maintain the health of the ocean, we need effective conservation and sustainable use strategies. These strategies require a strong science basis, yet our current knowledge of marine ecosystems is limited.

In the past, scientists have focused on managing a few species. Now scientists recognize that an ecosystem approach is needed for sustainable management. However, an ecosystem approach requires a lot more information. Recent advances in ocean technology have pushed the frontiers of marine biodiversity research to lengths unimaginable a decade ago. These technological advances provide a state-of-the-art suite of comprehensive tools to support an ecosystem-based management approach to Canada’s oceans.

Using an ecosystem-based approach, Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe) has brought together researchers from across Canada, dedicated to biodiversity science to gather the knowledge for sustainable management of Canada’s oceans from the coast to the deep-sea. CHONe research focuses on: how many and what types of species live in our oceans, and where we find them; how groups of species are connected to each other; how species and stressors influence how the marine ecosystem works, at varying scales and levels of complexity, and the overall health of the ocean.

It is estimated that only 1% of ecological data are accessibly archived for reuse. CHONe aims to have its Discovery Database and Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) record, linked to Data Packages, archived in permanent, public data repositories. For more information see CHONe Data Policy and Data Management - Introduction to Data ManagementData Management Plan and Appendix, and Glossary
